Board your transport in central Amsterdam and prepare for the scenic journey from the city to the Dutch countryside. On the way to several villages in North Holland, listen to your audio guide and learn about the sights, including dikes and polders—areas of land reclaimed from the water. Your first stop is Zaanse Schans, a pretty town on the Zaan River and a popular destination for its well-preserved windmills, some dating back to the 17th century. See evocations of traditional Dutch life at the historic shipyard, as well as the iconic Dutch windmills.
Next, continue to Volendam and Marken, admiring a picturesque scene of fishing boats and the occasional local wearing traditional Dutch clothing. In addition to approximately 45-minute stops in each town, you'll visit a nearby cheese farm for a demonstration and a sample of their dairy production. A visit to a local shoemaker to admire the art of carving and painting the wooden clogs for which the Netherlands is known is also a memorable part of the trip. After taking plenty of photos, your 5.5-hour tour concludes with a return bus ride to central Amsterdam.
